The Grade II Listed Victorian Tamworth Assembly Rooms had acoustic secondary glazing installed in the theatre auditorium as part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment.
Main contractor, Novus Property Solutions, contracted to complete the project, approached Selectaglaze to advise on the best configuration of units for the large arched original casement windows. With a busy car park and bus terminal right outside the theatre, noise insulation was paramount, as well as upgrading their thermal efficiency.
Once refurbished, these single glazed openings were treated with Series 41 heavy-duty side hung casements and 6.4mm laminate glass. Measuring around 2.5m (h) x 1m (w), weighing 93kg each and set 4m from the ground, scaffolding had to be erected to facilitate a safe and secure installation.
The timber subframes, into which the secondary units were fixed, were modified with a 300mm wide flat surface at the centre of the soffit to allow for the positioning of motorised blinds to be used for black-out during theatre performances.
After comprehensive upgrades to the whole of the building, especially the theatre auditorium, Tamworth Assembly Rooms, is set to welcome audiences and performers for years to come.
